Excerpt from “(flight)”

I lifted the window and stepped through the skylight,
filling bird seed into a feeder that swung from string.
A loop threaded into a circle, tied to a laundry line,
a small reward for an endless flight. Summer had been
long, this time might be the last time. I imagined myself
as I wanted to be and I saw myself standing still. I
envisioned myself as a stranger. I had written a note
in the middle of the night - you are losing the fight
      because there is no fight
.
